Light pinks, creamy milky whites, deep burgundies and classic reds: These are the warm tones that are set to dominate South African nail salons this year, while almond shapes remain the undisputed favourite, and cat-eye designs prepare to move into the spotlight. That’s the confident prediction from Muhammad Bwanika, senior nail technician at NM Beauty Bar in Sunninghill Square.
“Pink is still the number-one choice – especially soft, light pink,” says Muhammad. “Clients simply love it. You can try to steer them elsewhere, but nine times out of ten they come back to pink. It’s impossible to take it off the menu.”
He adds that milky white (often called “milk white” in the industry) is making a strong comeback, while pure white remains a firm favourite for pedicures. “Burgundy is refusing to fade, and good old classic red is as popular as ever. These shades just keep working, season after season.”
When it comes to shapes, almond continues its reign. “Right now, if your day is busy, you can guarantee at least half your clients will want almond nails,” Muhammad laughs. “It’s the shape everyone is asking for.” While he has noticed emerging styles creeping onto the scene, local clients are still sticking firmly with the elegant almond silhouette for now.
On the design front, Muhammad is most excited about the rise of cat-eye effects. “All nail techs should get ready – cat-eye designs are going to be huge in 2026.” He also predicts a fresh take on floral art. “The flowers we were doing last year are being modernised; cleaner lines, more dimension, more elegance. Clients are already starting to request them.”
Three-dimensional nails are far from disappearing, but a clever new technique is gaining traction. “Blooming-gel flowers are the next big thing,” Muhammad explains. “I’ve been working on the method and I know that clients are going to start asking for these delicate, raised floral designs very soon.”
Seasonal colours from late 2025 are expected to carry through the first half of 2026, especially while summer lingers. “Nothing dramatic has changed yet, so the warm-weather favourites are still very much in play.”
Muhammad also has practical advice for fellow technicians and clients alike: “Working professionals want nails that look beautiful, last longer, and don’t damage natural nails. That’s why gel techniques – polygel, rubber base, builder gels – are becoming essential. You simply can’t work in this business any more if you don’t master the ‘gel side’ of the industry.”
