As clients increasingly seek protective, low-maintenance, and scalp-friendly hairstyles, Suzan Etanda, hair stylist extraordinaire at NM Beauty Bar located in The Square, Sunninghill, shares her insights on the evolving world of African hair care and trends.
With years of hands-on experience working with diverse hair textures, Etanda observes a clear shift toward styles that prioritise hair health and natural beauty. “This year, natural hair is leading the way, with many clients opting to embrace their virgin, unprocessed hair,” Etanda explains. “People are becoming more aware of how certain chemicals can cause issues such as dandruff, dry scalp, itchiness, irritation, and even scalp damage. As a result, protective styles that allow the hair to rest and recover, while still looking fabulous, are in demand.”
Among the standout trends, French curl braids have surged in popularity since late last year. This elegant style features neatly braided roots transitioning into voluminous, bouncy curls at the ends, creating a silky, romantic look that’s both lightweight and eye-catching. “I’ve seen French curls everywhere on social media. Clients love how they add flair and movement without feeling heavy,” Etanda notes. “It’s a fresh take that blends sophistication with effortless style.”
Another rising favourite is Bongo braids (also known as Bongo twists or Bongo dreads). These are prized for their protective qualities, as the looser braids or twists are gentle on the scalp, reducing tension, while still lasting for weeks. “Bongo styles are ideal for long-term wear because they’re comfortable and low-maintenance,” Etanda says. “Clients appreciate that they protect the hair without causing strain, making them perfect for everyday life.”
Etanda emphasises that the success of any style depends on proper aftercare. “Maintenance is key—every client is different, so I always provide personalised product recommendations, and demonstrate how to care for hair, and maintain styles, at home,” she says. “When instructions are followed, the styles stay fresh and tangle-free. But if clients skip steps, issues such as matting can arise, leading to frustration. I encourage everyone to commit to the routine that I teach, for the best results.”
Looking ahead, Etanda predicts a continued growth in the fusion of traditional African hairstyles with contemporary influences. Natural textures and protective braiding techniques will dominate, offering clients empowering options that celebrate heritage while still embracing modern aesthetics, and being gentler to clients’ heads.
